Homework:
Math - Homework Lesson 24; 5a-d Reading - Wild Floods Main Idea practice book page Science - Solar Cooker Children's story It's our last week before winter break, andwe have a full week of academic instruction. Attendance is very important.
Today in reading, students finished their mid-quarter assessment and began working on biographies. In science students are having a test on energy this week, and their solar cooker book project is due. Math homework: Lesson 23 Problem Set. Students should use their notes on Divisibility rules and Associative Property to assist them. Congratulations to Skyler Gulley for being nominated as Student of the Week!
Today we made dough for pasta. Your child is bringing home a ball of dough, which was made by mixing 2/3 cups of flour and 1/3 cups of water. There is a recipe for dough and a simple marinara sauce along with directions for extra credit. Week of 12/19 Reading: We will begin working on Biographies. At the end of the quarter each fourth grader will participate in a Living Wax Museum. Math: Our focus will shift to factors and multiples of numbers. Science: Students will be taking a test next week that demonstrates their understanding of a scientific experiment from controls and variables to collecting and analyzing data. Today's date is 12/14/16. When is the next time we will have a date that consists of consecutive even numbers?
Homework: The students were given a science homework/project that is due next Wednesday (12/21). They have the direction sheet with the rubric on the back. They are to write a children's story about a solar cooker based on the experiments that they have done in class. The book should have characters, setting, and a plot that makes sense. The problem should be solved with the use of a solar cooker or proper thermal insulator for their cooker. They have data from class which needs to be incuded in their story as well. There book may be typed and printed at home. No late books will be accepted. Please make sure your child is staying on task with the completion of this project. Today our visiting chef Eric from Pilot Light came to do a pasta demonstration for the 3rd - 5th grade students. They learned about the history of pasta, how to knead and roll out dough, and how to cut the pasta. We will be following up in science on Friday. Students will make their own pasta to bring home.
Homework: Spelling story using all 12 i before e, except after c spelling words Write each misspelled word on the spelling test 10 times each. Congratulations to Madison Diggins for being voted as Student of the Week!
In reading we will work on a mid-quarter assessment that incorporates the skills we have been practicing for informational text. In math we will continue to work on division. We will have our division test on Wednesday. Please also continue to practice multiplication and division facts with your child. We are looking for everyone to have mastery of their 0-9 facts before we leave for winter break. During science, students will test out their solar cookers on food. They have been investigating thermal insulators and which worked best to heat water. Now they will use that data to determine which insulators worked best out of the 12 tested. On Tuesday, a visiting chef from the Pilot Light program will be at Ray to do a demonstration. Friday in science class, we will follow the steps of the demonstrations. Look for your students to bring something home that can earn them extra credit. Thursday the 15th is our PBIS/Class Dojo incentive trip. If your child received a permission slip, please return it by Monday. Homework:
Math Group 1 - p221 handout. Do problems 10-17, 28 and 29 in your math notebook. Check your answers. Math Group 2 - Engage NY Lesson 17 Problem Set. Solve the division problems using the base 10 block method we learned in class today. First break your number (dividend) down into 10's and 1's. Then draw large circles to represent your divisor (number you are dividing by). Finally break down your dividend and show how you equally split that number into groups. Count how many sticks are in one group - that is your quotient. If you have any left over, remember that is your remainder. Congratulations to Ari Stanton-Thomas for being voted Student of the Week! December's character trait is compassion.
This week in science, students will be investigating which thermal insulators work best in a solar cooker. In math, we will continue to develop skills in division. We are making progress on our multiplication facts, but could still need a bit more practice. 15-20 minutes a night of practice would benefit your child. Our reading focus this week will be making inferences in informational text. Homework:
Math - Group 1 Division Word problems (6) Group 2 - 4.3 Lesson 15 Homework Group 3 - worksheet 115/118. They should follow the steps done in class Reading: Some students did not finish Cause and Effect practice pages 145/146 in class or spelling sentences. There is a test tomorrow on Cause and Effect and i before e, except after c spelling words. |
