Monday begins the last week of the first semester, and we have a lot going on!
The Living Wax Museum is taking place on Thursday from 9:00 - 10:00 in the cafeteria. Your child should come to school dressed as their person. They should also have a change of clothes for after the wax museum. They should be working on their speech every day, so that they can have it memorized. They can bring their index cards back on Thursday for support if needed. They should sound like they are talking to someone and not reading, so work on their fluency with them. They will also need to bring a prop that represents their person. We talked about examples in class today. This is their end of the unit reading assessment. In science, students are working on completing their roller coaster project. They will be presenting them Thursday afternoon as their final science assessment of the quarter. Our division math unit is over, and we will begin working on fractions. If your child has not yet mastered their multiplication facts, please take 15-20 minutes a night to help them learn their facts. Many errors on math assignments and tests are coming from not knowing their facts. Remember there is no school on Friday, February 3rd. Today, students wrote their speech for next week's Living Wax Museum. They should have brought home their index cards to practice from. They should do their best to memorize their speech by next Thursday. They should not bring the index card back to school until next Thursday, so they can practice at home each night.
Science homework: Students received an article called Sir Isaac Newton and Lebron James. The comprehension questions are to be completed and returned Tuesday, January 31st. Math homework: Group 1; set 12.8, 2-16 even Group 2: Lesson 38 homework. They should solve each problem using the four partial product method. Parents: Raise a Glass for Ray School is coming up on Thursday, February 2! Please consider coming out to support our school!
Your $35 advance ticket includes beer, wine, and light appetizers. We have a terrific live band too. We will be recognizing an outstanding volunteer, Jennifer Williams, who does so much for the Ray community. The Hyde Park Neighborhood Club is offering dinner and fun for the kids. Get your tickets at http://rayschool.weebly.com/raise-a-glass-for-ray.html Can't come to the event, but still want to support Ray School, enter our Raise a Glass Raffle! We've got awesome prizes - a night at the Hyatt, dance, art, and improv classes, theater tickets, cheesecake, and more! Get your raffle tickets at http://rayschool.weebly.com/raise-a-glass-raffle.html During reading this week, students are working on their biography summaries. There summary will be finished on Thursday, so expect them to bring it home for practice. The goal is to have the speech memorized, but it can be written on note cards just in case of nerves. Of course, if the entire speech is read, the grade for that portion of the assignment will be decreased.
Tomorrow in science, we will begin our engineering project. All materials are provided for the students and they will only work on it in class. They will get a homework assignment on Thursday that will be due next Monday. More details to come. Math this week we are working on 2 digit x 2 digit multiplication using different strategies to solve. Homework Group 1: Lesson 35 homework (use area or bar model) Group 2: Lesson 36 homework (use partial product) Group 3: Set 12.6 p440 #1-10 (use standard form) Group 4: Division Review (use place value method) This week students will be working on identifying main ideas and supporting details. They will be using their biographies to practice this skill. They will continue working with their "r" spelling words from last week and will have a test on Thursday.
In math, we will review division, multiples, and factors Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We will then take our division assessment on Thursday morning. During science, we will continue working with potential and kinetic energy. Students will learn about Newton's laws of motion as well. First, I would like to say congratulations to both Yucheng Liu and Mario Alliey for their outstanding performance at the Ray School Spelling Bee today!
Your child should be bringing home their biography today as well as a note (on yellow paper) about the Living Wax Museum taking place on Wednesday, February 2nd. This weekend I am asking students to read at least 35 more pages in their book, so that they can have their biography finished next week. Students were also shown how to navigate student portal, so they can check their grades. They have their username and password written on an index card, and it should be in their take home folder. I want them to sit down with you once a week and go over their grades. I want them to click on each grade, so that they can look at the averages for each category in every subject. Students should be more knowledgeable about their grades and take ownership in maintaining good grades. Ray School is asking that Monday be a Day on not a Day off -In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We are asking students to commit to a day of service whether that be at home, church, shelter, hospital, etc. When they return to school on Tuesday, they will write about their experience. We finished our middle of the year NWEA testing today. I will be conferencing with students next week about how they performed and setting goals for the rest of the year.
Information regarding the Living Wax Museum project will be sent home tomorrow. Homework: Reading; Spelling Word Sort and Penmanship practice if not completed in class. |
